“Luzes relacionais” was part of the exhibition “Quasi Cinema” at the 2011 edition of Video_Dumbo / Dumbo Arts Festival. The exhibition, curated by Caspar Stracke and Gabriela Monroy, included works by Adam Bartholl, Ken Jacobs, and Andy Graydon, among other artists. From the festival’s website: “Quasi Cinema is a term that Brazilian artist Helio Oiticica coined in 1973 in reference to his experiments with film, slide projections, and new modes of cinematic reception. His ongoing series pursued the challenging attempt to distill the essence of cinema into a cinematic imaginary. The featured works in this exhibition are taking this concept as the outset for new arguments – some express this concept in media other than that of cinema itself, others re-appropropriate and “misuse” the primary functionality (and inherent poetics) of film projection.”

– Could you tell us about how you came to be interested in media art?
It happened while I was working as a musician in the nineties. At the time I was primarily composing and performing experimental music with my own chamber group (the Klaresque Ensemble). Towards the end of the nineties, I started to explore computer music, and it was then that I became very interested in the interactive, participatory, and generative capacities of digital technologies. I gradually stopped writing and performing music, and resituated my practice from performance-oriented works to installation-based works. (more…)

In general terms, the award categories at media art festivals have been subject to change as the creative uses of technology evolved during the last decades. The FILE PRIX LUX has the advantage of being created at a time in which it can be relatively safe to set up a few broad categories that cover most of the forms of combining art and technology. – What role does digital art play in representing complexity and chaos?
Addressing the digital in art rather than Digital art as a category, I would say that a role that the digital plays in art is that of the “(re)presenter” of complexity and chaos. In other words, when used in an artistic context, (more…)
